Volunteers on an October trip to Haiti brought food and supplies to children and families affected by Hurricane Matthew in southwestern Haiti. The situation was bleak for many residents in the area – the 200+ people who received food had not eaten for at least 10 days. Volunteers also delivered hygiene supplies to help prevent illness and conducted hygiene education.

The individuals reached were particularly grateful for the medical support volunteers on the team provided. On the second day of the trip, volunteers spent time at Compassion Attentive aux Orphelins d’Haiti (Jaguar’s School), one of Headwaters longstanding partners, that had sustained damage due to high winds, to deliver supplies including mosquito repellent, food, and vitamins. They also brought supplies to the children at La Benediction Orphanage. At all locations, team members worked with children in play therapy that included games and art projects.

Among the other work of our volunteers was checking in with and bringing supplies to the children at Life Christian Orphanage, another of Headwaters’ partners in Haiti, as well as traveling to both Dina’s Orphanage, where new mattresses and a repaired septic tank are helping to keep children safe, and New Grace School, where our sponsors are supporting 33 children at this rural school north of Port au Prince.
